Nature on the Board

ELC and our partner Lawyers for Nature helped create the first-ever Board seat for Nature for a UK-based natural products company Faith in Nature. 

We received significant support from the pro bono legal team at Shearman & Sterling. Numerous additional groups provided input into the project, including Voice for Nature and others. Leading up to the project, we contributed to a deep dive into the legality and practicality of giving Nature or specific ecosystems a voice in a board room (in the United Kingdom for the first case).

Since then, ELC has served as one of two proxies, along with Faith in Nature, speaking and voting for Nature in the board room. (This role is being served by Alexendra Pimor in consultation with ELC’s Nature on the Board Work Group.) Nature has a vote and equal standing with other Board members.

Now, we are building a coalition of partners to expand this victory into new companies and jurisdictions across the world. We believe this is the beginning of a revolution of corporate governance and practices to harmonize businesses with Nature.
