Earth Law Center has partnered with Kaua'i-based nonprofit Hanalei River Heritage Foundation to gauge community interest in recognizing Nature’s rights on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i. Above all else, this hope to recognize the rights of nature on Kaua'i aims to translate Native Hawaiian values into modern legislation, strengthen the ability for nature and Native Hawaiian culture to exist and thrive in the region, and offer community-based environmental protection.

As part of this campaign, Earth Law Center has prepared a document specific to the endangered and vital Hanalei River, located in northern Kauai; read the report here! This document traces the history of the rights of nature movement, describes the ecology and threats of the Hanalei River, explores Native Hawaiian environmental values and its relation to rights of nature, and makes a case for recognizing the Hanalei River's legal rights.
