EARTH LAW CLINICS TO TRAIN A NEW Generation of Leaders

MEXICO & LATIN AMERICA

Earth Law Center and one of Mexico’s top universities, UAM (Autonomous Metropolitan University), hosted a 10-day clinic on Environmental Law and the Rights of Nature from March 15-26, 2021. The Clinic was led by Claudia Brindis (ELC’s Mexico Lead) and Javier Ruiz Cruz, both of Earth Law Center, with support from our partner Litigio Estratégico Indígena A.C. (“Indigenous Strategic Litigation”).

Topics included Ecocentric Law, the Rights of Nature, human environmental rights, environmental law in Mexico, guardianship of Nature, and litigation strategy—all important Earth Law fields. Students had the opportunity to contribute to an actual case to help protect the heavily polluted Lerma Chapala Santiago Pacifico Watershed based on concepts learned in the clinic.

You can download the students presentations on the Lerma Chapala Santiago-Pacific Watershed, including Chapala Lake, the Santiago River, and the Lerma River Watershed.

ELC hopes this clinic can be used as a model for similar efforts across the globe. Contact cbrindis@earthlaw.org (Mexico and Latin America) or info@earthlaw.org if your school would like to host a clinic.

UNITED STATES & CANADA

Each year, Earth Law Center trains dozens of students in USA and Canada on Earth law and works with them on actual cases from across the world. Now, we are working to expand this program through formal law clinics. An “Earth Law Clinic” empowers students to participate in a cutting edge area of law that’s being forged right now—an extraordinarily valuable learning experience.

You can readily integrate Earth law into your existing programs, from a lightweight extracurricular clinic that provides a certificate of completion to incorporating the clinic into your curriculum and offering course credit. Having recently authored the definitive coursebook on Earth law, we are uniquely positioned to guide your team through the clinic startup process.
