Event Description - Rights of Nature at the UN Water Conference
The United Nations Water Conference will be the stage of the upcoming side event “Rights of Nature: The missing connection to enhance and implement the SDGs on Water” on Friday, March 24, 2023, at 3.30 PM. The event will explore the Rights of Nature framework as a powerful legal, non-anthropocentric, holistic tool for water restoration and protection, and how it can complement the global goals and objectives of restoration and protection of water ecosystems.
The event will feature Indigenous leadership from North America and the Global South, international organizations, state members, legal advocates, youth representatives, academics, and scientists. They will present several cases of rights-bearing aquatic ecosystems and link their professional perspectives and cosmovisions reinterpreting Sustainable Development Goals.
The speakers will discuss the connection between the Rights of Nature implementation and the achievement of the Global Biodiversity Framework, the different resolutions and reports of UN Harmony with Nature, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the United Nations Resolution 71/222 declaring the International Decade for Action. In Latin America, it relates to the principles contained in the Escazú Agreement on the protection of environmental rights and defenders of territories.
Monti Aguirre, International Rivers, will host the event, and Natalia Greene, Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature, will moderate it. Constanza Prieto, Earth Law Center, will provide the closing statements.
The Rights of Nature framework provides a pathway to center humanity as a part of Nature and transforms our relationship with Nature from dominion to interconnectedness. It can help ensure water for the environment, effective governance, and the maintenance of the ecosystem's life cycle for the benefit of Nature.
